MADE BY [U]
Made by [U] explores the perceived taboo that is vernacular design and reframes it as a colloquial and cultural practice that is often stigmatized and overshadowed in the field of graphic design. Our vernacular is how we express ourselves—how our practice interacts with us, our culture, and the greater design diaspora. In the field of graphic design, our primary function is visual communication first and foremost. For example, when working with a client, the job of a designer is to explore how to best visually articulate their vision or brand, but as a result we also inherently insert a part of ourselves into their visual identity—their vernacular. Thus, all design is inherently vernacular, since there is a form of cultural communication and exploration that is being conducted. This includes culture in a traditional and social sense. As designers we shape culture through our vernacular. There is no culture without the individual. This concept expands the practice of graphic design beyond corporate branding and into personal branding
