This is my undergraduate capstone, which explores familiar, personal, and cultural iconography in Bulgarian embroidered patterns. It features a combination of tradition Bulgarian symbols and custom ones which communicate the abjunction between my Bulgarian heritage and my life in America. The symbol itself is separated into 7 smaller symbols, which themselves are composed of even smaller symbols. Each group communicates a story of my life and my family's experiences—narrating what it means to be a Bulgarian-Amercan.
The installation consisted of a graphical poster with all seven symbols, 7 smaller panels that explained what each symbol meant, and a booklet that dove even deeper, as well as a hoodie and a t-shirt. The choice to include clothing relates to how these traditional symbols were originally displayed as a worn form of personal storytelling.
